Caleb Williams had the perfect self burn during Heisman speech

Caleb Williams won the Heisman Trophy, but wishes he was in the College Football Playoff.

While Caleb Williams just became a college football legend by winning the 2022 Heisman Trophy, he still needs to check off the College Football Playoff box before turning pro.

Although the true sophomore from Washington, D.C. is not draft-eligible, he projects as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after his junior season at USC. Had the Trojans held their own vs. the Utah Utes, they would be heading to the playoff over of C.J. Stroud’s Ohio State Buckeyes, alongside Stetson Bennett IV’s Georgia Bulldogs and Max Duggan’s TCU Horned Frogs this season.

To play for a national championship is a nice “consolation prize” for Bennett, Duggan and Stroud.

Caleb Williams admits College Football Playoff absence during Heisman speech

Even if the Trojans did not make the playoff this year, what a season it was for them! USC went 4-8 last fall. For them to be 11-2 in Lincoln Riley and Williams’ first year in Los Angeles is nothing short of incredible. To be playing Group of Five champion Tulane in the Cotton Bowl is an amazing capstone to an utterly fantastic year for the entire USC football program. They are officially back!

While next year is looking incredibly bright for the Trojans, the time is now for the Buckeyes, Bulldogs and Horned Frogs to see if they have what it takes to win a national championship. Bennett’s Dawgs are a massive favorite to repeat, as they will take on Stroud’s Buckeyes in the Peach Bowl. Duggan’s Horned Frogs will be battling the Michigan Wolverines in the Fiesta Bowl.

Though one could argue for any of the four semifinalists winning a national championship this year, it is Georgia’s to lose, if we are being totally honest. Michigan is the closest approximation of the Dawgs, but for all intents and purposes, are a lesser version of them. TCU has heart and talent, but maybe not the depth. As for Ohio State, the Buckeyes were lucky to make the four-team field…

As far as next season is concerned, USC  is on a shortlist of teams who could realistically win it all.
