FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Supporters of legalizing sports wagering in Kentucky have cleared their first hurdle. Their bill won strong bipartisan approval from a House committee Wednesday. It marks their latest quest to regulate and tax the activity. Republican Rep. Michael Meredith says the bill would take an industry that now “exists in darkness” and regulate it. Past efforts to legalize sports betting in the Bluegrass State garnered House support but died in the Senate. David Walls, with The Family Foundation, spoke out against the measure Wednesday. He says state-sanctioned sports wagering would create more social problems by draining money from families.
