BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In Bowling Green, The MLK Holiday Planning Committee every year hosts events to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and this year was no different.
On the actual holiday, January 16, the committee holds and held breakfast for the community. At 7:30 a.m., community members began to arrive at Parker Bennett Curry Elementary to listen to guest speakers and music to kick off the holiday. One member of the committee Clay Smalley Jr. told News 40 “the breakfast is to bring everyone together to talk about the history of Martin Luther King and the history of Bowling Green.”
From the breakfast, even more people gathered at the Warren County Justice Center in downtown Bowling Green to start of the symbolic march, like so many that happened in the 1950s and 60s. The crowd walked from college street, down East Tenth to State street to reach the State Street Baptist church. There at the church, a service was held to commemorate the holiday.
News 40 spoke to the 2023 chair for the holiday committee, and Felicia Bland said that her dream is Dr. King’s dream. Bland said that though we have made progress as a people, there is still more to do and she hopes that this day helps people to remember that.
